MetaCalls It Quits on Crypto Wallet ‘Novi’ After Just 10 Months
Meta Platforms has issued a notice to users of its cryptoproject, Novi, recommending that they withdraw their funds without delay. Thisfollows the announcement that Meta Novi will be shutting down the projectfollowing the introduction of a digital wallet for the Metaverse. Novi, a digitalwallet that offers fee-free instant money transfers using crypto, will be 'expiring soon'according to Meta.
The current form of the Novi project has been available forbarely 10 months. However, its first phase – Calibra, the wallet for Meta’sLibra stablecoin– became available in 2019. September 1 will mark the end for the wallet, withusers no longer able to add money to their Novi accounts from July 21. The project’send will also mean that Novi for Whatsapp will no longer function.
The balance in the accounts after 1st September will betransferred to the Debit Card/Bank linked to the Novi accounts of the User. Inplace of the Novi project, Meta is introducing the Metaverse digital wallet. Thiswallet will allow Metaverse players to securely manage their identities, assetsand payments.
Looks like Meta is re-emphasizing the potential of theMetaverse. In October 2021, Novi Wallet began testing in a select group in the US. Metaspoke about the ease of sending and receiving money – a process that can happenquickly, securely, and at no charge. Stefan Casarial, Meta Head of Crypto andFintech at Novi, announced the rollout on December 9th.
