Australian Open NFT Project 'AO Metaverse' Wins Big at Global Advertising Awards
The Australian Open Metaverse in partnership with Melbourne Web3 studio 'Run It Wild' has won the first Cannes Lions Award for the NFT Metaverse project in the Entertainment for Sport category, in this example the annual Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament held in Melbourne in January.
The AO Metaverse project was also awarded the Bronze Lion for its AO Artball for "the most innovative use of technology and platforms in sport", a unique feature that used match data from actual tournaments. As crowd numbers were affected by the COVID lockdown and many fans were unable to attend in person, the United creative team built a replica of the Melbourne Park tennis complex in Decentraland, where people could watch matches in real time and interact with each other could talk.
Fans attending matches in the Metaverse had the chance to purchase an AO Art Ball NFT attached to a specific location on the center court, which marked the winning shot of both the men's and women's championships, along with all other final matches in the tournament. The project proved so successful that the value of the singles championship NFT (men's, won by Rafael Nadal) increased by 4000 percent.
